Algeria, Tunisia Sign Defence Cooperation Agreement

General Saïd Chanegriha, Minister Delegate to the Algerian Minister of National Defence, Chief of Staff of People’s National Army, received in audience this Tuesday, 7th October 2025, at People’s National Army headquarters, the Tunisian Minister of National Defence, Mr. Khaled Elsehili, who visited Algeria at the head of a high-level military delegation.

The welcoming ceremony began with the salute of the national flag and the performing the national anthems, followed by a military salute presented to the guest by a military formation representing the various forces of the People’s National Army.

The audience was attended by the Secretary General of the Ministry of National Defence, Forces Commanders, the Commander of the Republican Guard, the cabinet Director of the Ministry of National Defence, the Acting Commander of the National Gendarmerie, Department Heads, the Army’s Comptroller General, as well as Central Directors of the People’s National Army General Staff and of the Ministry of National Defence, in addition to members of the Tunisian delegation.

During this meeting, the two parties discussed areas of bilateral military cooperation, as well as ways and means to strengthen coordination on issues of common interest. They also discussed security challenges faced at the regional level and exchanged point of views on various current issues, the Algerian Ministry of National Defence said in a statement.

General Chanegriha welcomed the Tunisian guest before highlighting the excellent relations between both countries, which have a strategic character, reflected in similarities and processes of continuous dialogue and constructive coordination between the leaders of the two countries.

“Algeria and Tunisia share, through their geographical, historical, and civilizational ties, the same aspirations for strengthening security and stability in the region and building emerging economies that generate sustainable development,” he said.

“The excellent relations maintained by Algeria and Tunisia have a strategic significance, reflected in the similarities that unite them, as well as the processes of continuous dialogue and constructive coordination between the leaders of the two countries,” he added.

General Chanegriha further emphasized that the security, geopolitical, and economic challenges prevailing in the region require the two countries to strengthen joint action, based on a clear-sighted and integrated vision.

“For this purpose, Algeria, under the leadership of the President of the Republic, Supreme Chief of the Armed Forces, Minister of National Defence, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, is working to consolidate its relations with Tunisia in various areas, particularly defence and security, because in Algeria, we believe that the security and the stability of both countries require the highest possible level of coordination and consultation.”

“Moreover, the security, geopolitical, and economic challenges prevailing in our region require us today, more than ever, to strengthen joint action, according to a clear-sighted and integrated vision, based on dialogue, coordination, and on the exchange of experiences and best practices in areas of common interest,” he stressed.

“Subsequently, the two parties signed the joint intergovernmental agreement on defence cooperation between the Ministries of Defence of the two countries. This agreement represents a milestone in the history of bilateral relations and a major step forward in strengthening military cooperation between the two parties,” he concluded.
