Kuwait Marked on Sunday the 36th anniversary of Iraq’s invasion of the country on August 2, 1990, a defining event in the nation’s history that continues to symbolize national unity, resilience and the sacrifices made to restore the country’s sovereignty.

The anniversary remains a national occasion to honor the sacrifices of Kuwait’s martyrs, recognize the resilience of its people and reaffirm national unity while strengthening patriotic values among future generations.

Kuwait’s Defense Minister Sheikh Abdullah Ali Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah affirmed that the memory of the brutal Iraqi invasion will remain indelibly etched in the Kuwaiti national conscience, serving as a perpetual reminder of state resilience, national unity, loyalty and unwavering defense of territorial integrity.

In an official statement delivered to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Sheikh Abdullah Al-Ali characterized the tragic aggression as a defining watershed moment in the nation’s history, recalling the great sacrifices made by loyal Kuwaiti citizens to preserve the country’s sovereignty and legitimate governance.

The Defense Minister paid solemn tribute to the nation’s righteous martyrs and valiant prisoners of war, noting that their extraordinary selflessness in the face of heinous existential aggression was the bedrock of the state’s resilience.

Sheikh Abdullah Al-Ali emphasized that the ordeal proved Kuwait’s true defensive power lies in the cohesion between its leadership and citizens, alongside strong multilateral support from sisterly and allied international powers that enforced international law to restore full independence.

The Defense Minister renewed the pledge of allegiance to safeguard the homeland and maintain high defensive readiness under the leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, and His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah.
