Thuraya Telecommunications Company, a leading Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) operator, announced the launch of the Thuraya IP Commander, its first ruggedized satellite broadband terminal designed using MIL-SPEC components. The terminal will be commercially available from all Thuraya Service Partners in Q3, 2014.

Developed in collaboration with US-based SRT Wireless, the IP Commander is engineered to enable mission-critical voice and data connectivity in mobile or stationary applications in the most extreme and remote environments. It is well suited for military and governmental operations, as well as other applications including land mobile, energy and mining. The package includes a rugged voice handset that offers clear and uninterrupted voice connectivity across Thuraya’s satellite network, which covers many of the world’s strategic conflict zones.

IP Commander facilitates vital communications at high speeds, essential for C4ISR, blue-force tracking, logistics management and tactical command. Offering IP data rates of up to 444kbps, it is Thuraya’s only ruggedized vehicular terminal capable of achieving streaming IP speeds of up to 384kbps, as well as user-definable asymmetric streaming functionality.

Randy Roberts, Vice President of Innovation at Thuraya, said : “The launch of IP Commander demonstrates our commitment to deepen Thuraya’s IP broadband portfolio. As global defense and infrastructure budgets shrink, the IP Commander will prove to be a vital element in the communication strategy of government users, delivering great value without compromising on quality and performance. IP Commander’s compact and rugged form factor make it a truly unique product.”

Asher Faredi, Product Manager of Land Data at Thuraya, said : “Thuraya is proud to serve the diverse requirements of over 30 government entities around the world. In developing IP Commander, we listened to our government users’ feedback to deliver a product that offers voice and data capabilities, as well as the ability to withstand the toughest conditions. The terminal is easily installed in any vehicle within minutes. Its simple plug-and-play features enable quick connectivity for mission-critical deployments. Coupled with the robustness of the Thuraya satellite communications network, IP Commander gives government and other users the ability to stay in touch even in extreme conditions.”
