Chairman of the Jordanian Joint Chiefs of Staff Major General Yousef Huneiti received Sunday an Iraqi military delegation, headed by Secretary-General of the Iraqi Ministry of Defense Lt. General Shwan Mazhar Ali.
The meeting discussed mechanisms to advance Jordanian-Iraqi military partnership and enhance bilateral coordination on issues of mutual interest, particularly counterterrorism efforts and measures to combat drug smuggling.
Talking at the meeting held at headquarters of Jordan Armed Forces (JAF)-Arab Army, Huneiti reiterated the Kingdom’s commitment, under His Majesty King Abdullah II’s leadership, to strengthen its ties with Iraq and provide various forms of support and cooperation in ways to bolster the two countries’ security and stability.
For its part, the Iraqi delegation expressed appreciation for Jordan’s supportive positions toward Iraq, Petra news agency reported.
Praising the “strong” mutual relations, the delegates stressed the importance of building on ties to serve shared interests.
The meeting was attended by a number of senior JAF officers, alongside the Iraqi Military Attaché in Amman.
In another development, the Chief of Staff of the Iraqi Army, Lieutenant General Abdul Amir Rashid Yarallah, chaired Sunday the second commander selection session of 2026 at the Ground Forces Command. He was received by the Commander of the Ground Forces and several staff officers, the Iraqi Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
The session was attended by members of the commander selection committee, the Deputy Chiefs of Staff, the Inspector General, the Security Advisor to the Ministry of Defense, a representative from the Legal Department, the Deputy Commanders of the various branches of the Armed Forces, and the directors of the relevant departments and divisions.
During the session, the officers nominated for the positions were presented based on their resumes, security vetting, integrity, competence, and their suitability for their current roles within the officer training system. The nominated officers were then discussed and voted upon by the committee members to determine their appointments to the new positions.
Earlier last week, Lieutenant General Yarallah, chaired on Wednesday the 8th session of the Army Chief of Staff Council for the year 2026, in the presence of the Senior Secretary of the Army Chief of Staff, the Assistant Chiefs of Staff of the Army, the Military Inspector General, the commanders of the weapons, the Heads of the bodies, and the Directors of the relevant directorates and branches, the Ministry said in another statement.
At the beginning of the session, the main topics, materials and paragraphs included in the agenda were read by the Secretary of the Conference, the most important of which were the topics related to the proposals of the departments, leaderships and directorates regarding the formation and creation of a number of battalions and companies to meet the requirements of the work and compensate for the shortage in some parts of the Iraqi Army.
