In another development, the research team of the Egyptian Armed Forces College of Medicine has achieved a distinguished accomplishment by winning the Gold Medal and being nominated among the top teams contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Competition, held in Paris, France.
The competition witnessed the participation of more than 5,000 students representing 415 research teams from over 50 countries worldwide, who competed to utilize advanced genetic engineering technologies in developing innovative scientific solutions to global challenges across multiple disciplines.
As part of their preparation for the competition, the research team underwent extensive scientific training in the application of modern biotechnological methods. The team selected a critical medical issue concerning chronic asthma, a condition that leads to severe and sometimes life-threatening complications.
Through their research, the team succeeded in theoretical and laboratory validation of a genetically modified bacterial strain that can be administered to patients through an inhaler used once annually, based on precise laboratory simulations. The innovative concept and its practical feasibility received wide acclaim from the competition’s international judging committee, recognizing the project’s potential as a significant step toward the development of new therapeutic solutions for millions of asthma patients worldwide.
This achievement reflects the strategic vision of the General Command of the Egyptian Armed Forces, which places scientific research, innovation, and sustainable development at the forefront of its priorities. It reaffirms the Armed Forces’ dedication to empowering future generations of military and civilian scholars with the knowledge and skills required to keep pace with global scientific and technological progress.
The Egyptian Armed Forces continue to pursue their mission of excellence and leadership in all fields, ensuring that the flag of the nation remains high in every international forum, carried forward by the dedication, ingenuity, and perseverance of its sons and daughters.
