Russia’s single exposition organized by Rosoboronexport at WDS 2026 (Riyadh, 08-12 February) demonstrates large-scale models of the Tor family air defense systems developed by the Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant Kupol (part of the Almaz-Antey Aerospace Corporation).

The SAM systems of the Tor family are designed for air defense of important objects and troops, including on the march and in maneuvering types of battle, against aircraft, helicopters, cruise, anti-radar and other guided missiles, planning and guided aerial bombs, as well as UAVs, in a difficult meteorological and interference situation. The Tor-E2 SAM system and its modifications by the combination of its performance characteristics are the best short-range air defense systems.

These combat vehicles are distinguished by a record short deployment time from travelling position to combat position (3 minutes), which enables to repel a sudden raid. Its unique ability is to deploy and fire in motion. Available ammunition (16 missiles) is many times more than ammunition of other Western similar systems, which enables to repel a massive raid.

The speed of air surveillance - 1 antenna revolution per second - is the best rate all over the world. Other performance characteristics are also at or above the world best samples. The effective area: up to 16 km by range, up to 12 km by altitude and ±9.5 km by ground track parameter. The lower border of effective zone is 10 m or less.

The Tor family combat vehicles have fully proved their performance characteristics in real combat conditions, where they engage a wide range of targets, including the most advanced aerial weapons. Many combat crews have engaged over a hundred targets. It is worth mentioning that the maximum characteristics of the engaged AW - speed over 700 m/s, the effective zone of non-maneuvering targets with radio range of 1 m2 - are often exceeded. It was repeatedly reported that the Tor SAM systems intercepted GMLRS rockets with a speed of up to 830 m/s and small-sized UAVs with radio range of 0.02 m2 or less.

The Tor family SAM systems vary in chassis. Versions on a tracked and wheeled chassis, on the basis of a two-link transporter and in the form of an autonomous combat module are developed and produced. Placement on a standard tracked chassis is preferable for convoying of armored forces parts across rough terrain. The wheeled version is best where developed network of paved roads is. The SAM system based on a two-link transporter is designed for use in extreme conditions, including lack of roads.

The combat module of the Tor-M2KM SAM system can be used as local air defense or integrated with a chassis of suitable lifting capacity, including the customer's production. The module can also be transported by a cargo helicopter, which allows it to be placed in hard-to-reach places - in mountainous or wooded areas, on the roofs of houses, etc. One of the options for using the Tor-M2KM ACM is to place it on the deck of a warship or even a merchant ship. It makes the system to be the inter-branch one and enables rapid maneuver for available AD means from the land to the sea.

Another air defense means is a combat vehicle of the Typhoon-Air Defense MANPADS anti-aircraft gunners squad. The CV provides anti-aircraft gunners with enhanced mobility and protection. Communication facilities enable receiving target designation from a higher command post. It is possible to conduct combat work both from the side of the vehicle and being dismounted.

Along with the supply of its products, the Kupol ensures their maintenance, repair and modernization. (LAGUK-Media; Photo: Tor-M2KM SAM system © Kupol)
