US-based Rizzani de Eccher has won a $44.8 million firm-fixed-price contract for the design and construction of a facility replacement at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

The company, which is a unit of Italian construction firm, Rizzani de Eccher expects to complete construction by December 30, 2010. The US Army Corps of Engineers' Transatlantic Programs Center in Winchester, VA received eight bids for the contract.

Al Udeid Air Base is a military base located west of Doha. It is host to a forward headquarters of US Central Command and home to No. 83 Expeditionary Air Group RAF and the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing of the USAF.

According to Globalsecurity.org, Al Udeid Air Base was built at a cost of more than a billion dollars. Its runway is the longest in the Persian Gulf. The facility's shelters can accommodate nearly 100 aircraft, more than needed by the Qatari Air Force, which has only a dozen fighters. The facility is owned and operated by the Qatari armed forces.
