Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Bahrain’s Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, announced a strategic contract signing with Leonardo S.p.A on the sidelines of the Bahrain International Airshow 2024.
The agreement aims to upgrade surveillance and radar systems at Bahrain International Airport (BIA), a strategic step in Bahrain’s plan to enhance the aviation sector’s efficiency in line with international standards.
The Minister emphasised the importance of modernising air navigation systems at Bahrain International Airport to align with global aviation advancements, noting the ministry’s commitment to achieving the highest standards of safety and quality in air navigation services, Bahrain News Agency (BNA) reported.
The Minister highlighted that this agreement reflects Bahrain’s ongoing commitment to improving air safety and optimising air traffic management through the installation of advanced radar systems, including primary and secondary radar systems, which will provide accurate, real-time monitoring of air traffic in Bahrain’s airspace and at the airport.
He added that this upgrade aligns with Bahrain’s directive for developing its aviation sector according to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) requirements, supporting the Kingdom's capacity to accommodate growing air traffic with modern, secure facilities.
The enhancements will enable Bahrain to deliver top-tier aviation services within the Bahrain Flight Information Region, meeting global aviation safety standards.
Bahrain’s Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, also announced a new contract signing between the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications and Thales on the sidelines of the Bahrain International Airshow (BIAS) 2024 which concluded Thursday, to support and maintain the air navigation message handling system at Bahrain International Airport (BIA).
The Minister highlighted the importance of transport infrastructure in driving Bahrain's economic growth, noting that investment in advanced aviation technology reinforces Bahrain’s status as a regional leader in this essential sector. He stated that enhancing air navigation systems aligns with Bahrain’s strategic objectives, ensuring efficiency and safety in air traffic management while meeting international requirements and improving service quality.
The new navigation system is expected to enhance services for aircraft traversing Bahrain’s airspace and improve operational efficiency for flights at BIA.
These agreements are part of the ministry's broader strategy to engage with international industry leaders, leveraging advanced technologies to elevate Bahrain’s air navigation standards. Such initiatives strengthen Bahrain’s position as a regional air transport hub and support the Kingdom’s sustainable development goals.
