ATK announced that the ATK Defense business group commenced operations at the beginning of the company's new fiscal year, on April 1, 2012.

ATK President and CEO Mark DeYoung, announced the formation of the group in February as part of the company's plan to consolidate into a three-group operating structure.

ATK Defense comprises the businesses previously operated by ATK's former Armament Systems and Missile Products groups, and is headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland.

ATK Defense brings industry leadership in ammunition, precision and strike weapons, missile warning solutions, and tactical rocket motors across air, sea and land based systems. The group is the largest U.S. producer of small-caliber ammunition, as well as a leading producer of medium- and large-caliber ammunition and medium-caliber gun systems.

ATK Defense is home to ATK's Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile (AARGM), next-generation GPS-guided mortar and artillery projectiles, Joint and Allied Threat Awareness System (JATAS), fuzes and warheads, propulsion and controls for missile defense interceptors, weaponized special mission aircraft and advanced propulsion. The group also brings extensive experience and expertise in defense facility management and modernization.
