UAE, Azerbaijan Sign Letter of Intent on Defence Cooperation

UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met Monday with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev at Qasr Al Shati in Abu Dhabi to review bilateral relations and discuss ways to expand cooperation within the framework of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership and Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The two leaders explored collaboration opportunities in areas supporting the development goals of both countries, particularly in economic, investment, development, and renewable energy sectors.

A Letter of Intent on defence cooperation between the UAE and Azerbaijan was announced, along with a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a twinning partnership between the Department of Municipalities and Transport - Abu Dhabi and the city of Baku, UAE national news agency WAM reported.

Meantime, Mohamed bin Mubarak bin Fadhel Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of State for Defence Affairs, met with Colonel General Zakir Hasanov, Minister of Defence of the Republic of Azerbaijan, as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation relations between the two friendly countries in the defence and military fields.

During the meeting, a number of topics of mutual interest were discussed, along with ways to support and develop military cooperation and coordination.

The two sides also exchanged views on relevant regional and international developments, in a manner that contributes to enhance security and stability and serves their shared interests.

For his part, Lieutenant General Issa Saif bin Ablan Al Mazrouei, Chief of Staff of the UAE Armed Forces, has met Colonel General Karim Valiyev, First Deputy Minister of Defence and Chief of the General Staff of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and the accompanying delegation.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed ways to enhance joint military and defence cooperation between the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Azerbaijan. They exchanged views on areas of military training and the development of relations in the security field, in a manner that serves the mutual interests of both countries.

The meeting comes within the framework of the two friendly countries’ keenness to further develop bilateral military and defence cooperation.
