The Arab Peace Initiative Committee decided to go to the United Nations (UN) to call on its member countries to recognize the State of Palestine in accordance with the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, and to muster international support for the move, both at the UN General Assembly and the Security Council.

Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told the meeting there is no intention to isolate Israel and added that peace with Israel is crucial.

At the close of the meeting held in Doha yesterday under the Chairmanship of Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al Thani, the Committee declared its resolve to approach the UN for Palestine’s recognition.

But Erekat said he wondered if the UN General Assembly or the UN Security Council is to be approached for the purpose of recognition. “What happens if the US uses its veto in the Security Council,” added Erekat.

Erekat said Washington could pressurize countries that recognize Palestine and that would do immense harm to the Palestinian cause. “Some European countries might indulge in bargaining. It is thus necessary that all Arab countries, China, Russia, India, Brazil, Lebanon, France, Germany, UK and Portugal back the move”, he added.

The Committee also decided to assign the Arab Group at the United Nations to take necessary steps to make the move a success, including looking into the legal requirements and establishing contacts and communications with related parties.

In its statement, the Committee urged the Chairman of the Committee, the Arab League Secretary General, the State of Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan and other countries to follow up on the situation and take what they see as practical steps and necessary consultations and contacts to mobilize the support required from all countries and from the UN Security Council members in order to secure the recognition of the State of Palestine in accordance with the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, as well as secure its full membership of the United Nations.

The statement underlined the position taken by the Arab Ministerial Committee in its statement issued on May 28, 2011 reminding in the meantime of the position expressed by US President Barack Obama in his speech on May 19, 2011 in which he called for the achievement of peace on the basis of the two-state solution in accordance with the June 4, 1967 borders.

The Committee reiterated the Arab position that the option of a just and comprehensive peace with Israel could not be achieved without Israel’s full withdrawal from the occupied Arab territories to the lines of June 4, 1967, including the occupied Syrian Golan Heights and the remainder of occupied territories in southern Lebanon, the establishment of the independent State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital, finding a just and agreed solution to the refugees problem in accordance with the UN resolutions of the international legality and the Arab peace initiative as well as the any partial or phased solutions.
