Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree to ban the supply of arms to Libya, the Kremlin said Thursday.

The decree on measures to implement U.N. Security Council Resolution 1970 bans the supply of arms, ammunition and military equipment to the North African country, the Russian Presidential Press Service said.

According to the decree, Russia will "examine all cargo to and from Libya if there is information giving reasons to believe that such cargo may contain banned products," the Interfax news agency reported.

U.N. Security Council Resolution 1970, dated February 26, imposes an arms embargo on Libya, where massive protests demanding an end to Muammar Gaddafi's 42-year-long rule escalated into violent clashes between anti-government protesters and Gaddafi's loyalists.
