In 2007 the European Commission committed the operators of aeronautical radio transmit and receive stations to introduce a new channel spacing for the airspace above FL195 (19,500 feet). The conversion from 25 kHz to 8.33 kHz multiplies available communications channels, making it possible to accommodate the increase in air traffic.

In the near future, the EU guideline will be expanded to include the airspace below FL195. The guideline also defines a conversion phase from 2012 to the end of 2018. Thereafter, European radio stations must support 8.33 kHz spacing on all voice channels and in the entire airspace.

For this reason, DFS (Federal Air Traffic Control Organization) has commissioned Rohde & Schwarz to convert about one hundred of its radio stations to provide 8.33 kHz compliant VHF/UHF operation, to be accomplished within the stipulated period from 2012 to 2018. Furthermore, Rohde & Schwarz is to add VoIP capability to the radio stations.

The order includes the delivery of more than 2,200 R&S Series4200 VHF and UHF software defined radios, plus other system components such as R&S GV4000 redundancy switches, filters, RX multi-couplers and equipment cabinets.

In accordance with the contract, Rohde & Schwarz shall also be responsible for integrating all components right up to the complete radio stations ready for transition into operational use.
