The Defense Security Service (DSS) honored Raytheon Company with a record five James S. Cogswell Awards for industrial security excellence during a June 24 ceremony in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“Less than 1% of companies our size achieve this recognition from DSS. Safeguarding our customers' information is one of our top priorities. Every Raytheon employee is committed to the highest possible security standards,” said Dan Schlehr, Raytheon Vice President of Global Security Services.

The Cogswell Award selection process is rigorous. A DSS Industrial Security Representative may only nominate facilities that have at a minimum two consecutive superior industrial security review ratings and which show a sustained degree of excellence and innovation in their overall security program management, implementation and oversight.

Raytheon facilities being honored were:

Raytheon Missile Systems operations in:

  • Tucson, Arizona (which has received four consecutive superior ratings)
  • Rancho Innovations, in Rancho Cucamonga, California (six consecutive superior ratings)
  • Javelin Joint Venture (seven consecutive superior ratings)

Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems:

  • Customer Integration Center in Washington, D.C. (five consecutive superior ratings)

Raytheon U.S. Business Development:

  • Raytheon Field Office, Eglin AFB, Florida (five consecutive superior ratings)

The award focuses on principles of industrial security excellence. Factors include establishing and maintaining a security program that far exceeds the basic National Industrial Security Program requirements; and providing leadership to other cleared facilities in establishing best practices while maintaining the highest standards for security.

Established in 1966, the Cogswell Award is named in honor of the late Air Force Col. James S. Cogswell, the first chief of industrial security within the Department of Defense. Cogswell was responsible for developing the basic principles of the Industrial Security Program, which include an emphasis on the partnership between industry and government to protect classified information.

The Cogswell award is the most prestigious honor the Defense Security Service may bestow to cleared industry.
