Russia and Egypt have hammered out three agreements for military and technology cooperation with a view to reviving historic strategic relations between the two countries.

The agreements were signed in Moscow Wednesday at the conclusion of the first session of the joint commission on military and technical cooperation, co-chaired by Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu and his Egyptian counterpart Sedki Sobhi, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a press statement.

The statement said that the pacts comprised a protocol on military and technology cooperation, a charter for the joint military commission and a protocol on the first session of the commission meeting.

During the meeting, the Russian Defense Minister stressed the importance of the Russian-Egyptian cooperation.

“It is developing rather dynamically thanks to common efforts,” Shoigu stated, adding that the Russian-Egyptian military and technical cooperation has long history and dates back to 1955.

“Our high-priority task is to fulfill the arrangements reached in Cairo in February,” Shoigu said.

He unveiled that the intergovernmental agreement concerning the Russian-Egyptian military and technical cooperation was signed in spring 2014.

“This agreement allowed us to establish regulatory and legal framework in order to organize bilateral cooperation. And today we have the session of the first Joint Russian-Egyptian Commission on military and technical cooperation. We are to resume the military cooperation in 2014, define the main directions of further cooperation and sign several agreements,” Sergei Shoigu added.

For his part, Egyptian Defense Minister Sobhi welcomed the outcome of the joint commission's meeting.

“Today, we have the session of the first Joint Russian-Egyptian Commission on military and technical cooperation in the course of which we are signing several very important agreements,” he said.

The two Ministers agreed Tuesday that Egyptian servicemen will continue participating in exercises held by the Russian Armed Forces and will conduct a naval exercise in the Mediterranean Sea as well as a Rapid Response Force anti-terrorist exercise.

The Russian Defense Minister proposed receiving Egyptian servicemen in the Russian Federation in order to participate in the International Army Games and the Military and Technical Forum “Army-2015”.
